Black Swan Bazaar & The Fancy Flea One More Time

Here we go again, it’s time for the Fancy Flea.

The great news is that we are now the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint retailer for Polk County and that is so exciting because we will be working with our friends  at Robyn Story Designs to put on a treasure hunt with will give you chances to win wonderful prizes (more on that later).  The Flea is finally coming all the way north on Kentucky Avenue, so don’t stop at the railroad tracks, keep walking north and visit our booth  which is now located in front of our shop.  You can check out all of the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint ™ products as well as the art, home décor and designer jewelry in our shop. True Love At The Black Swan Bazaar

Last week, a friend called us and asked if we would be OK with him proposing marriage to his true love in our shop.  The “friend” was Brandon Eady, one of our favorite people (and our social media guru) and his true love is Mckara Calhoon, who started out as one of our favorite customers and became another one of our favorite people.  As you can imagine, our response to Brandon’s request was an emphatic “yes” and then we proceeded to begin freaking out as Saturday drew closer.  Yvonne reached out to our good friend and candy maker extraordinaire Leah @ Got Candy who provided her amazing chocolate covered strawberries.  Add to that a batch of Miss Yvonne’s special Mimosas, and you have the makings of a grand morning.  Rather than do a bunch of typing, I will let the pictures speak for themselves.  Brandon, thank you for allowing us to be a part of this special moment.

Annie Sloan Work Shop (July 30,2012)

On Monday, July 30, we had our first Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Work Shop.  This was a half day class where we taught five finishes to the six attendees, who are all very creative and fun to work with.  What made it a really special class was that Lori Rombold (one of our mentors at Robyn Story Designs) stopped in and helped us with the work shop.  Our thanks also go out to Claudia Iris for allowing us to use her studio at Creative Journies (see pix below) to conduct the work shop. Great Shops: Pumpernaks, Lakeland, FL

I am still not sure what the definition of a “Pumpernak” is, but here is the story I got:  Ann Ruben’s husband’s grandfather owned a deli called Pumpernicks in South Florida and as a tribute to him, she calls her shop Pumpernaks (that’s pumper + the knack from knick knacks).  After a few minutes visiting with Ann, I realized that her shop is aptly named.  It’s a lot like her, part whimsy and a lot of fun. Pumpernaks is located in downtown Lakeland in Trader’s Alley between Tennessee and Kentucky Avenues.  As you enter the alley from Kentucky Ave, you will see her sign.

From there you only have about 100 yards to go and it is well worth the walk down the red brick paved alley. Since her shop is so small (about the size of an average bedroom) she has a lot of stuff outside in the alley.

Yes it is small, but it is a classic example of big things coming in small packages.  Ann has a great eye and a sense of whimsy that makes her shop a great place to visit on a Saturday morning.

By the way, Pumpernaks is only open on Saturdays from 10:30am – 5:00pm, with the exception of First Fridays and a few other special event days.

The other nice piece of the equation is that she prices things very fairly so you can pick up any thing from a brass “nude beach” sign to a puppet and a lot of things in between without breaking the bank.  Pumpernaks is definetly something to add to your “cool things to do on a Saturday” list.

Black Swan Bazaar Fancy Flea Offerings Cont.

Good morning everyone, it’s a new day, and as promised, here are the rest of the painted and/or repurposed pieces we will offer at this Saturday’s Fancy Flea in downtown Lakeland.  For those of you who are just joining us, we are previewing new pieces that we have done for the Flea so that our customers will have a chance to see and/or purchase them before they are gone.  We posted photos of 7 pieces in the last post (yesterday) so just go to that post if you want to catch up.  If you have a question about a piece or wish to purchase one, just call us at the shop (Black Swan Bazaar: 863-510-5980).  Today’s pieces are shown below.

These are two message or note boards made from old sash windows and strung with twine.  Very cool. Continue reading
